Açorean Heart: Rediscovering My Roots

Hi! I am Marta

My Açorean Connection

Everything started in a little house on Rua da Nossa Senhora das Dores, in the freguesia da Conceição, city of Ribeira Grande, São Miguel. That’s where I was born and raised until my family made the big move to Montreal, Canada when I was eight years old.

Navigating two cultures can be pretty challenging. You’re always on the hunt for that feeling of belonging. Eventually, I found my place here in Montreal, a city I genuinely love. It has shaped me in so many ways. But there’s still that lingering thought that somewhere else, another version of me exists, one that never quite came to be. As a mother now, that nostalgia for my roots has become even more pronounced.

So, I decided to travel back to my hometown, and we spent the summer soaking up the Açorean way of life. It sparked this desire in me to share and connect with others who feel SAUDADES, this feeling that’s hard to put into words.

Welcome To My Açorean Travel Blog

Right now, São Miguel and the Açores are getting a ton of attention. Travel blogs are buzzing about it, showcasing the gorgeous scenery, and delicious food.

This blog will be your go-to resource, offering insights into everything from travel logistics to the unique challenges visitors might face. I’ll also address the impact of increasing tourism on the islands and share tips on how to enjoy all that São Miguel and the Açores have to offer while honouring its uniqueness.

Despite being a home away from home now, to me, it’s more than just another island getaway. When I’m there, I connect with people who share my spirit and values. It’s a comforting reminder that I’m seen and understood for who I am and that feeling is what I hold dear. I hope you do too.

Let’s embark on this journey through the Açores together! I aim to offer a fresh perspective, not only for visitors but also for Açoreans living abroad who are eager to reconnect with their heritage.
